How to Get The Most Out of a Job Offer

November 26th, 2012

It’s the finish line of your job search: the elusive job offer. Some of us are so excited to hear those final words that we get wrapped up in the moment. Treat it for what it is – a business agreement – and your transition from job seeker to happy employee will be an easier one. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line.

Start Date

You might be so ready for that paycheck that you’re willing to start tomorrow. Just be sure to think twice before committing to an immediate start date. Make sure loose ends are wrapped up (Babysitters? Transportation? Mental preparation?), and you’re fully ready to commit to a full-time work schedule before you walk in the door as an employee.

Vacation Time

Got an already-planned vacation? Know that you’ll need a holiday off for family time? Now is the time to speak up or forever hold your peace. At some companies you may be able to negotiate unpaid time off that was already planned prior to your offer.

Salary

Now is the time for negotiation. It’s not an option at every company or at every position, but the best time to discuss this topic is now. It doesn’t hurt to ask, and you’ll regret it if you don’t. If there’s no room for negotiation, take the time to learn about the earning potential for your position and how to if there’s a chance for a raise in the future.

 A word to the wise…

The offer isn’t final until both parties have signed the proper paperwork. So keep your emotions in check during and after the verbal offer, and wait to spread your good news until the documents are completed. Also, remember that some companies require a 30 or 90-day trial period where you could be released at any moment. Just avoid these first month faux pas and you’ll be great.

How Employer Branding Can Help Attract Top Talent

November 19th, 2012

What’s an “employer brand?” It’s your image. Your reputation. Your values. You might be the greatest place to work, but unless it’s conveyed in your branding, potential employees – and top talent – will walk on by. When an employee interviews well, they’ll focus on how they can help you. But secretly, all they want to know is how you can help them. Stay ahead of the competition when it comes to recruitment. Start defining your brand now:

Test the Waters

Think about your company’s culture and values. What are people saying about your company right now? Do a Google search or ask a few employees to define your employer brand in their own words. Is it far from where you stand? If it is, you really need to take the branding into your own hands instead of letting others declare it for you.

Think about the Competition

Just as there is competition between candidates, there is competition between employees. In order for top talent to pick your company over Company X, you need to stand out. What’s unique about your culture and values? Take a trip to the competition’s careers website – what can you do to make yours even better? What do they do right? What do they do wrong?

Get Inspired

Companies like Zappos and Google have their pick of the best of the best. Top talent is clawing each other to get into their doors. It’s all thanks to their excellent career sites and outstanding employer brands. It’s not even about their products or the positions available – Zappos and Google have built an aura around their employees and the work environment itself. That’s what you need to do.

Define Who You’re Looking For

Part of your brand should be focused around your employees – your company wouldn’t be anything without them. And your recruiting strategy will be more successful when you can easily determine which candidates will excelin your workplace. So, who are they? What kind of skills and personality traits make your workforce great? Be really specific here.

Gather Testimonials

A great careers site has more than just a list of benefits, a mission statement, and a history of the company. That’s not really what potential candidates are looking for. They want more. So, publish great quotes from current employees, or even better – make a video. Go into detail about your unique work environment and the exclusive opportunities your employees take advantage of every day. Make potential candidates want to work for you right now.

Never Stop Recruiting

With a strong employer brand and a great careers site, there’s no reason to ever stop recruiting. You don’t want to stop the momentum. Create a pipeline of qualified candidates. Stay in touch with potential hires. Don’t wait until a position opens up. Fill your employees in on your new employer brand, and put value on your employee referral program. Your own staff definitely knows what it takes to be successful at your company.

Once you have the talent, you’ll want to keep them – right? Read our tips for how top companies keep top talent.

How to Stay Positive When You’re Feeling Negative

November 12th, 2012

The path to “happy employee” is not an easy one. We’ll always be in pursuit of that dream job, but sometimes there are legitimate reasons why we’re upset. An overly-long job search. A difficult coworker. No promotion in sight. So, what to do? Consider these simple lifestyle changes that can easily improve your demeanor.

Avoid the trap.

Venting about work can be therapeutic every so often. But complaining all-day, every day is not. Make some adjustments to your work friends. Start backing away from “Negative Nancy” or learn to change the subject.

Leave it at the door.

You don’t have to physically bring work home to bring work home. If you’re still feeling stressed out our upset once you’ve left your place of employment, learn to let it go once you drive off the property. Time at home is time best spent doing things you enjoy, like spending time with family.

Take a break.

Whether it’s a lunch break with a good book, a 15 minute walk around the building, or an afternoon off mid-week, sometimes we need to hit the re-set button to get ourselves back in the right frame of mind.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Sometimes, it’s out of your hands. Especially when it comes to a job search. There are many (unavoidable) reasons why you didn’t get hired. And your manager may be able to give you a completely legitimate reason why you can’t get a promotion just yet – even if you’re a superstar employee!

Start talking.

Sometimes all you need to do is ask. Whether you’re feeling burned out or looking for a challenge, start taking responsibility for your career path by taking steps that will put it back on track. We give some tips in how to make your job the best it can be.  Have some tips to share on what’s worked for you? Leave your comments below!

3 Strategies for Job Searching Over the Holidays

November 5th, 2012

It’s tough to feel like ‘it’s the most wonderful time of the year’ if you’re unemployed or looking for a new job. And, if  you’ve stepped into any store lately, you’ve seen that the pumpkins and witches switched to turkeys and elves weeks ago. That means only one thing: holiday stress is coming – quickly. What’s a job seeker to do? There are more than a few obstacles that will slow down your job search this holiday, but there are also a few proactive strategies you can take to secure a temporary or full-time position even during the hectic holidays.

1. Attend the “Holidays Can Positively Affect Your Job Search” Webinar

There are many opportunities for you to advance your job search during the holidays.  Find out what they are on November 13 at 10:00 a.m. This webinar, available via ABR JobConnect, will cover the following topics:

– Opportunities for you to network
– You will have less competition during the holidays
– Hiring budget must be spent by the end of the year.

To register, login to ABR JobConnect  (or create an account) and click on the “webinars” tab. Then click on the webinar title and the registration link.

2. Make a Statement

You’ve been nice this year, so ask your friends and family this favor: a bit of alone time. Express to them how important your job search is even during the holiday season. Let them know that you will be dedicating Sunday afternoons, weekday mornings, or an endless amount of time to your job search.

 3. Make a Goal

You’ll be more likely to stay on track with your search if you assign yourself a goal or a deadline each week. How many resumes should you be sending out each week? How many hours should you be spending each day? How many people do you want to reach out to for advice this month? ABR JobConnect is a great free resource to help you answer these questions.
