Employee Spotlight: Richard Rutues

Light from a show. Vector illustration.Richard Rutues enjoys spending time with his family and fishing. Like most people, he is not fond of ‘fishing’ for jobs. In May of 2014 he applied for manufacturing work at ABR Green Bay.

During the last year and a half, he has worked at three Green Bay area companies through ABR. Staffing Coordinator Carol Gibson said, “Richard is a hard worker who is extremely reliable. He always has a positive attitude!”

Staffing Specialist Dana Pasterski adds, “In the time we have worked with Richard, he has shown he is trustworthy, responsible and treats his co-workers and supervisors with respect”.

For these reasons, ABR Green Bay recently awarded Richard with the quarterly Performance Recognition Award. Way to go Richard! We are fortunate to have you on the ABR team!

Holiday Job Search Strategies

Job-FairIt’s tough to feel like ‘it’s the most wonderful time of the year’ if you’re unemployed or looking for a new job. And, if  you’ve stepped into any store lately, you’ve seen that the pumpkins and witches switched to turkeys and elves weeks ago. That means only one thing: holiday stress is coming – quickly. What’s a job seeker to do? There are more than a few obstacles that will slow down your job search this holiday, but there are also a few proactive strategies you can take to secure a temporary or full-time position even during the hectic holidays.

1. Attend Job Fairs

2. Make a Statement

You’ve been nice this year, so ask your friends and family this favor: a bit of alone time. Express to them how important your job search is even during the holiday season. Let them know that you will be dedicating Sunday afternoons, weekday mornings, or an endless amount of time to your job search.

3. Make a Goal

You’ll be more likely to stay on track with your search if you assign yourself a goal or a deadline each week. How many resumes should you be sending out each week? How many hours should you be spending each day? How many people do you want to reach out to for advice this month? ABR JobConnect is a great free resource to help you answer these questions.

Congratulations to Anne Grafmeier, our 13th Free Rent and a job! winner. Anne plans to treat herself to Packer tickets.

In early fall, Anne realized it was time for a change. She was not happy in her current job. Anne decided to apply with ABR Appleton because she heard ABR was a great company to work for. In September, she quit her job and began working for ABR at Trilliant Food & Nutrition in the packaging department. She’s never looked back! In fact, she’s trying to convince her friends to apply.

Safe Machine Operation – Guards

machine operationMoving machine parts have the potential to cause severe workplace injuries. Safeguards are essential for protecting workers from these preventable injuries. Any machine part, function, or process that may cause injury must be safeguarded.

Safe Machine Operation – Guards

Guards are barriers that protect workers from dangerous moving parts by preventing the entry of their body or clothing into the machine. If you observe unsafe guarding – guarding that is loose, broken, easy to remove or get around, or if there are areas of a machine that simply are not guarded and have pinch points that are potential spots where injury can occur, please bring that information to your supervisor’s attention and to ABR.

We want to make certain corrective action is taken to keep you safe.

Some general reminders about safe machine operation:

  • Authorization and training: All machine operators must be authorized and trained, and the training must be documented. Follow manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE): All necessary PPE must be worn.
  • Lockout/tagout program: A comprehensive and audited lockout/tagout program must be in place, and operators must adhere to it.
  • Preventative maintenance program: Parts must be clean and in good working condition.
  • Inspections: Inspect equipment before use, and never use defective equipment.

How to Honor and Contribute Meaning to a Veteran

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11th, an important day for showing appreciation to members of our military, past and present. Here are some suggestions on how to honor our veterans:

1. Attend a Veterans Day Event Parade or Service – Roy Rogers once said, “We can’t all be heroes; someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.” Veterans Day is a great opportunity to do just that. Here’s a list of parades being held in Wisconsin and parades in Minnesota.

2. Donate or Write a Letter – There are a plethora of wonderful organizations who offer all manner of support, services and appreciation for our service members. Operation Gratitude is one of many.

3. Fly a Flag – Veterans Day is a great opportunity to show your patriotism and support by flying the American flag.

4. Ask someone about their service – Veterans Day is a great time to ask them about their service. Some questions to get started are: What did you do in the military? How long did you serve? What was your proudest moment in all your time in the service?

5. Work for a  ‘2015 Military Friendly Employer‘.  ABR/LHI values the service Veterans and their family members have given to our country and support the hiring of returning Service Members and military spouses.

And the Winner is…Chelsee!

Between work, school, homework, and life’s responsibilities, it had been a long week. Chelsee was a bit tired when she arrived for work the afternoon of October 30th. But when she walked through the door of Energy Services where she works as a part-time receptionist, what happened next chased the sand man away.

Standing in the lobby were familiar faces from the ABR Schofield office and ABR CEO Jim McNett.

“Hi Chelsee”, said Jim. “Have you heard about ABR’s Free Rent and a job! sweekstakes”? “Yes, I have”, replied Chelsee. “You’re our 12th winner; congratulations”, said Jim. Chelsee’s eyes misted up while she gave a heart felt “thank you” to Jim and all present.

Chelsee is the fourth winner from the ABR Schofield office! Past winners from ABR Schofield are Justin Otto, Brandan Prechel and Brad Lemke.

Chelsee has been working for Energy Services through ABR since September, 2014. In fact, when she first began working at Energy Services, her receptionist position was full-time. When Chelsee expressed her desire to pursue a degree in criminal justice, her supervisor worked with ABR to create a part-time position so she could go to school and continue working.

“We just love Chelsee”, said ABR Schofield Branch Manager Carol Howard. “She has such an effervescent personality and our client recognizes that she is a great employee. I was thrilled we found a solution that enabled Chelsee to go back to school and continue working where she is well liked and valued”.

How to Sell Yourself In A Cover Letter

Ever heard the phrase ’30 second elevator pitch’? The term itself comes from a scenario of an accidental meeting with someone important in an elevator.  If the conversation inside the elevator is interesting, it will either continue after the elevator ride, or end in scheduling a formal meeting. In this case, the formal meeting is an interview.

When job hunting, it’s important to create your ’30 second elevator pitch’ to use in cover letters and at job fairs (or other networking events). Your ‘pitch’ should answer these questions:

  • Your background and experience
  • Where you work and your accomplishments
  • What kind of job you are looking for

Keep in mind you are providing a summary about yourself; not your life story. The pitch is intended to stress the benefits you can offer to the company. Example, if your background and experience is in customer service, your pitch might be:

I have two years of experience working in a fast paced call center at a company that provides home owner warranties. I respond to customer needs while providing service with a smile. In addition, I resolve customer problems and accurately document calls using a computer. I have been repeatedly recognized by my supervisor for providing outstanding customer service. When new customer service representatives join the team, they often job shadow with me until they are comfortable taking calls independently.  I am ready to take my  career to the next level and am applying for the position of customer service trainer.  

Remember, you never get a second chance to make a great first impression. While preparing your pitch may feel and sound awkward at first, with patience and practice, it will flow naturally. For additional ‘elevator speech’ preparation tips, check out the career library at ABR JobConnect.
