First Month Faux Pas

October 22nd, 2012

Starting a new position can be unnerving. You have to learn new things, meet new people, and most importantly, you’re not quite sure of the work environment.  The atmosphere at every company is different. What’s totally acceptable? What’s an obvious no-no? Here are just a few behaviors to be aware of when you’re the newbie at work:

1. Avoid Doing Personal Chores on Work Time

Be extra weary of how you’re spending your time at work. You want to make a good impression, right? So set the tone that you’re a trustworthy employee immediately. Make personal phone calls during your scheduled lunch break or rest breaks, not during work time.

2. Don’t Divulge Too Much Personal Information

Being friendly pays off. The best employees get along with their coworkers and their bosses, and may even become friends along the way. But don’t share too much personal information with your coworkers.  Keep conversations professional, and avoid gossip at all costs.

3. Skip the Swear Words.

Some people may find swearing totally acceptable, but others may be completely offended. Don’t even bother testing the waters. Err on the overly cautious side with more than just your word choice. Avoid touchy subjects and controversial issues as well.
