The 3 Biggest Job Search Mistakes

June 24th, 2013

Job-Search-Mistakes1

All of us have had what I like to call ‘Homer Simpson moments’. That moment you realize you’ve just made a big mistake and hit yourself in the forehead while muttering “DOH!”. If this has happened to you during the job search process, take heart. There may be a few reasons why you haven’t been hired yet that are out of your control.

But for the most part, the fate of your job search is in your hands and you might be making a killer mistake that’s holding you back. Regardless of how you’re feeling – frustrated, depressed, stressed – you can overcome this challenge. Here are three things you need to avoid if you want your job search to end:

1. You’re playing the waiting game.

You’ve landed an interview so you put your job search on halt. You’ll play this one through and see how it turns out. WRONG. You need to create a pipeline of possibilities so that if one candle burns out, you still have others burning as back up. What’s the worst that could happen? You get two job offers in one day? That’s not so bad.

2. You’re applying to the wrong jobs.

You’re overqualified. Or under qualified. Or not qualified at all. Don’t become desperate and apply to every job you see.  You’re wasting your time and the company’s time. Seek out the few positions that are a good fit for you and do your absolute best to land them. Not sure what type of job you’re interested in? ABR’s free career portal, ABR JobConnect, can help you sort that out.

3. You’re simply not trying hard enough.
Finding your next job is kind of like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s a bit of a numbers game and a bit of a game of roulette. The right circumstances – connections, timing, and opportunity – have to line up. Keep playing hard until you score big.

When Employee Engagement Goes Down So Does Your Company

June 17th, 2013

employee-engagement

Employee engagement is a huge buzzword in the HR industry. And rightfully so. A recent Gallop survey conducted in 2012 found that companies that scored in the top half of employee engagement have double the odds of success as those companies who are listed in the bottom half. The companies that scored in the 99th percentile had quadruple the odds of success as those at the bottom. These numbers are based on data from almost 50,000 businesses across 34 countries and 49 industries with a total of 1.4 million employees.

“Engagement” is measured based on your employees’ performance levels, which involve motivation, involvement, and commitment to the company and to their manager. Gallop defined success through a conglomeration of metrics including profit, productivity, customer engagement, employee retention, and more.

In a summary of the study, Gallop highlighted nine performance outcomes for the top quarter of companies, which were “remarkably similar” to their 2009 poll and to their seven previous studies on employee engagement. They include rates of:

  • 37% lower absenteeism
  • 25% lower turnover (in high-turnover organizations)
  • 65% lower turnover (in low-turnover organizations)
  • 28% less shrinkage
  • 48% fewer safety incidents
  • 41% fewer patient safety incidents
  • 41% fewer quality incidents (defects)
  • 10% higher customer metrics
  • 21% higher productivity
  • 22% higher profitability

The results are clear: there is a solid link between worker engagement and organizational performance. Engaged employees positively affect the desired performance outcomes of a company regardless of the industry or country.  Employees who “pass go and collect $200” will not help you win in the Monopoly game of life. When they are unhappy, you’ll be unhappy. That’s not good.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to sparking engagement within your company, but the steps you can take to promote it are simple enough. It requires a emoting an understanding and caring attitude toward your workforce. Connect with them. Motivate them. Congratulate them. Brush up on the 10 Easy Ways to Reward Your Top Employees and incorporate at least three of these strategies into your workplace. Empower your workforce. Consider how to increase employee retention by implementing programs that help you promote from within or incentivize high performance.

It really comes down to treating your employees well. Did you know that you can improve your customer service by improving the treatment of your employees? There are those simple values again: building trust and showing respect. These basic life skills go oh-so-far in the workplace from upper management all the way down to those on the first day of their first job.

Most importantly, live by this phrase, “Employees are a company’s most valuable asset.” Without them, your company can’t function. And if your employees are not engaged, your company won’t perform well. You’re a captain and they are your crew. If the ship is sinking, you’re going down with them. But if you make sure there is a good breeze in your sails and the seas are calm, you will reach your destination.

You’re Unemployed. Now What?

June 10th, 2013

fired

Let go. Laid off. Fired. Nobody likes to hear that they’re not needed (or wanted) anymore. It’s not easy to stay motivated and keep spirits high after getting a brutal introduction to unemployment, but that’s exactly what you have to do.

You know all those sayings like, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger?” And “It’s not about how many times you fall down but how many times you get back up again?” Those sayings need to become your new mantra. Here are four steps that can help you during the early stages of unemployment:

1. Get your resume ready immediately.
Create a master resume, even if you usually just fill out job applications and don’t need a resume. Right now, it can be in any format you wish – bullet points, paragraphs, whatever. Focus on your strengths and your experiences and start thinking about what you’re qualified to do.

2. Tell people.
It’s not enjoyable to say, “I lost my job.” But you never know when someone can point you in the direction of a job lead or a new connection. Put yourself out there. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. A staffing agency can increase your chances of finding a job exponentially.

3. Have a sense of urgency.
You never know how long it will take to find the right position. Stay committed to the search and be sure to dedicate a large portion of your day – every day – to making connections or searching for a new listing. After all, you’re not really unemployed. You have a new job now: to find a job.

4. Search and Connect
ABR JobConnect has a step-by-step process to guide one’s job search. Specifically, the ‘search and connect’ tab will guide you through how to market your abilities and skills using job boards and informational interviews. It also covers networking and overcoming obstacles. Signing up for ABR JobConnect is free; why not take advantage of it?
