Why Everyone Needs Soft Skills

What are soft skills and why should you care about them? Soft skills are traits that characterize how a person interacts in their relationships with others. Regardless of the type of work you do, everyone needs at least some soft skills. If you want to work for ABR (or any employer), soft skills matter. In fact, employers look for soft skills on your application, resume and during the interview process.

Follow these hand tool safety tips from ABR to keep injuries at bay

Employers are responsible for the safe condition of tools and equipment used by employees. Employees are responsible for reporting tools not in good working order (not performing properly or broken), using the correct tool for the job and proper use of tools.

Before Using Tools

  • Ensure you know how to operate the tool. If you don’t, obtain the necessary training or certification needed to safely operate the tool.
  • Inspect all hand tools before they are used. Even employee-owned tools used on a job site should be inspected before use.
  • Inspect handles for cracks
  • Make sure blades are sharp and in good condition
  • Make sure striking surfaces are solid and free of worn edges or mushrooming that could create a flying debris hazard

During Tool Use

  • Follow the instructions. Hand tools are designed to be used under particular manufacture-specified conditions and only used for their intended purpose.
  • Use the recommended personal protective equipment; in many cases safety glasses and/or gloves should be used
  • Practice extra caution when conditions or tasks to be performed may require the need to hold the hand tool in an awkward position

Megan Patza wins ABR Talent Sweepstakes Drawing

Luck, especially bad luck, is often said to “come in threes“. Between a wrecked car, broken glasses, and soggy cell phone, the second week of January was off to a very bad start for Megan Patza. On Sunday her car was totaled in an accident. On Monday her eye glasses were broken. On Tuesday her cell phone was dropped in nearly a foot of water.

Her fortunes turned though on Thursday, January 15th when she was informed she won the January Free Rent and a job! Talent sweepstakes drawing. The monthly grand prize is $1,000. The December winner was Andrea Mora, an employee with ABR in Stevens Point. The November winner was Austin McCain, an employee with ABR in Appleton.

“I tried so hard not to cry”, Megan said. “I have two little ones at home so it helps a lot”.

ABR CEO Jim Mcnett, Regional Director Ernie Harley, and Sturgeon Bay Staffing Coordinator Deb Schaefer presented Megan with an over-sized (and actual) check at Hatco Corporation in Sturgeon Bay where she works as an assembler and packager of electrical mechanical components. She has been working for ABR Sturgeon Bay since April, 2014.

3 Strategies To Land Your Dream Job

Good news! The employment market is the strongest it’s been in the last six years. And, according to CareerBuilder’s annual job forecast, more than one third of employers expect to add full-time, permanent employees in 2015.

Among employers planning to add full time, permanent staff, two of the five areas they are hiring for include administrative and customer service. Even more good news? ABR Employment services places people in these types of positions at our client companies.

According to Donna Rosato, a senior writer at MONEY magazine, there are a few key things you should do to help you land your dream job this year.

1. Be Top of Mind – Look at what your online presence says about you. If you have a LinkedIn profile, use language in your LinkedIn profile that matches the type of positions you’d like to land so recruiters find you when they search for candidates.

2. Try Employment Agency Work –  ABR is an employment agency. Working with an agency that provides supplemental staffing to employers is expected to pick up over the next 12 months as a way for employers to fill in-demand roles. According to CareerBuilder, 46% of employers plan to hire temporary or contract workers in 2015, up from 42% last year. Of these employers, 56% plan to transition some temporary or contract workers into full-time, permanent roles. Last year at this time, 65% of ABR Talent were hired into permanent, full-time positions at Logistics Health, Inc. in their call center!

3. Be Open to Opportunities – If someone from a staffing agency calls you or a friend passes on information about a job opening, have an open mind. Ask questions even if you’re not interested in the position or looking for work. You may have a friend or family member that is perfect for the job; you can pass on the information to them. Also, staffing agencies generally have multiple openings and if you’re not interested in the one they called you about, they may know about another opportunity that’s a better fit.

ABR Respects Me; Other Staffing Agencies Didn’t

Janessa (ABR Madison) shares her experience about what it’s like to work for ABR:

Growing up, my parents always told me, ‘Treat others like you want to be treated’. I started working for ABR in November 2014. ABR treats me the way I want to be treated, with respect and kindness. I’ve never worked for a staffing agency that has done that, and I’ve worked for a few. The people at ABR are kind, understanding and work with you until you find a job that is a good fit.

The other staffing companies I’ve worked for would promise things and not deliver on what they promised. That’s not professional.

ABR manages their job boards well. They are up to date with their job postings and they’re taken down when the job is filled. Other staffing companies I’ve worked for would leave old job posts up. I would apply for jobs that had already been filled and that was frustrating.

I love ABR! They’re the only staffing company I’ve worked for that has a monthly drawing for staff to win $1,000! And, the only one I’ve worked for that gives out quarterly awards to people for great on-the-job performance.

Happy New Year from everyone at ABR Employment Services. In this edition of ABR HR Insights Magazine you’ll find some note-worthy news about the HR industry and ABR Employment Services.

In this edition, our feature article, “Is Your Company Culture Holding You Back?,” urges companies not to underestimate the role that company culture plays in their efforts to attract and recruit top talent. Check out the article’s six suggestions for nurturing leadership, effective communication, and other culture components.

The theme of leadership runs through some of this issue’s other articles, too. For example, in “Succession Planning Beyond Senior Leadership,” advice is offered for companies to think beyond their current employee rosters and plan ahead in order to ensure their longevity. Also, in “A Secret for Today’s Distracted Leader,” one critical trait that all leaders should actively cultivate among themselves is examined.

Finally, in our last issue, we announced the launch of the ABR “Free Rent and a job!” talent appreciation campaign. We’ve selected two winners since then — Austin McCain, who’s been with ABR since April 2014 and does general plant manufacturing work for one of our clients, Eggers Industries, and Andrea Mora, who has been working at Fey Printing since November as an assembler through ABR. Stay tuned for news about additional winners in future months.

In closing, at the start of the new year many people make resolutions to help them sketch out an improvement plan to follow during the next twelve months. Companies, too, can seize the opportunity.
