ABR In The Community: Volunteer Spotlight

November 20th, 2017

Community involvement is a core company value to help enrich the communities where we live and work. We encourage and support all employees in their giving efforts.

Chief Human Resources Officer Sandy Beckwith volunteered in Panama with her three adult children. This is Sandy’s story of why she volunteers, how she came to choose volunteering overseas and how she and her children gave back on their mission trip.

Why Sandy Volunteers

I am blessed with healthy kids.  I believe in giving back and playing it forward.  Both of my parents died from cancer.  I have volunteered a lot with the American Cancer Society, as we need to put an end to cancer.  Panama was low income and disadvantaged adults and children.  I wanted my kids to be exposed to those that are less fortunate than us and to help them.”

Destination Panama

Why did we decide to volunteer in Panama? Going on a mission trip with my kids was on my bucket list.  Three years ago, on Christmas Eve, I gave them each a certificate to go on a mission trip with me.  I never imagined that all of us would be able to go at the same time!  My daughter got engaged last April and I told her we needed to get our mission trip in.  She picked the date and all of us could get off from work that same week!  Score International was so easy to work with.  I googled mission trips and reached out to them.  I highly recommend them!”

Providing Basic Needs

I have awesome friends!  I posted one message on Facebook that I was going to Panama and the donations came!  One friend dropped off 70 pairs of sandals!  We took 3 suitcases of donations.  We had 80 tooth brushes, lots of shampoo, soap, etc.  My son put in a window at a home.  We volunteered at a festival for disadvantaged kids.  We taught English and brought lots of arts and crafts.
